What are affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements that help you change how you think when you focus on them regularly. We all tend to get stuck in negative cycles of thinking, going round and round over the same draining and anxiety-creating thoughts. Affirmations are like a break in the mental weather; a ray of sunshine that breaks through the dark clouds and helps you get your perspective back.
Are affirmations unrealistic wishful thinking?
While affirmations are no substitute for medical help and therapy if you’re experiencing anxiety or depression, they can help you form better mental health habits. It’s like exercising our physical muscles to strengthen them and develop new movement habits. Deliberately using positive statements can reprogram our thinking habits and lay down new neural pathways. Over time, we begin to think and act differently.
If it’s hard to reconcile how you feel with the words of a positive affirmation, think of it as similar to physical exercise. Are you taking on too much at once? Can you take a smaller step? For example, instead of saying to yourself: “I have a magnificently abundant life”, can you say, “ I am open to my life-changing for the better”. And, just like exercise, can you suffer a little burn, knowing that it’s building your strength?
